Synesthscope

The Synesthscope is a multitrack visualiser that utilises a combination of midi, audio analysis and visual synthesis to turn music into synaesthetic visuals. The synethscope also integrates the colour organ into a more complex system.

  • Music is often made of several distinct elements, the polyphonic voices of a piano for example, or the many instruments of a brass band. The relationship between these different elements can produce unity and harmony, or disparity and chaos. To be able to visualise music it is important to be able to achieve both clarity and chaos.

  • In the synesthscope, separation is achieved through deliberate use of colour, shape and space. Each track is given its own unique array of hue, shapes and spacial positioning within a black void, which acts as a visual silence for the sounds to appear in.

This allows the visuals to overlap and even overwhelm, whilst each element maintains its own distinct characteristics.
