A Colour Organ.

“Colour organ” is used as a catchall word to describe the instruments that perform colour music. Colour Organs tie specific notes of an instrument to specific colours.

A Colour Organ was a research based project, looking at the history of colour organs and oclour music and using the research to inform the creation of software that can take music and turn it into a colour music in realtime.

Scales and Chords

The colour scale used in A Colour Organ is a modified version of the Scriabin scale. Contrary to most colour scales, which map the spectrum of visible light chromatically across an octave, the Scriabin scale is mapped clockwise around the circle of fifths. The colour scale was modified to reflect a more balanced view of the spectrum of visible light.

One of the main points of interest was to represent musical chords visually by combining the overlapping colours, inspired by Alexander László’s Farblichtmusik projections. For example, the notes C and D# are red and blue respectively. Played together they produce a purple colour,
